Overview

The town of Murray is in the middle of the eastern edge of Orleans County, bordered by the town of Kendall to the north, Clarkson to the east, Albion to the west, and Clarendon to the south. Murray includes the village of Holley, which is on the banks of the Erie Canal. Free concerts are held there every summer. Other hamlets in town include Brockville, Hulberton, and the hamlet of Murray. This is an agricultural community of about 6,200 residents with a few businesses in the village, such as a dollar store, a bakery and a diner.


Essentials

The Holley Community Free Library is at 86 Public Square. The Holley Central School District has an elementary school and a middle-high school. The post office is at 5 Wright St. Shopping and grocery shopping can easily be done in Brockport, a five-mile drive east. There, you can find everything from a Walmart superstore to a funky downtown shopping district to a Wegmans supermarket. Lakeside Memorial Hospital also is in Brockport and serves the area.



Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor activities, like hunting, fishing and snowmobiling, are popular here. Oak Orchard Marine Park and Hamlin Beach State Park both are short drives to the north. Holley has two golf facilities: Hickory Ridge Golf and Country Club, and Red Oak Golf Range. For most other activities, it’s a short 10-minute drive to Brockport, where you’ll find shopping, a movie theater, bowling, night clubs, and events at the College at Brockport. Maple Grove Farms, at 4394 S. Holley Road, has a sugar house where maple syrup is made from tree sap.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 104 heads east and west through town, and Route 237 is the north-south thoroughfare. Route 18 is just north of Murray, Route 31 and the Thruway are a short drive south.



Pros & Cons

Murray is a town with wide-open spaces, popular with outdoors types who like to hunt and fish. Holley is on the historic Erie Canal and has a boat launch. It’s just five miles from Brockport, a lively college town, with more affordable housing here than in Brockport.
