Overview The town of Carlton is in north-central Orleans County, bordered to the north by Lake Ontario and to the south by the town of Gaines. This is where the Oak Orchard River enters Lake Ontario, and where Oak Orchard Harbor and Orleans County Marine Park provide some of the area’s most ideal boating and fishing locales. Carlton is actually made up of 20 communities, including Point Breeze, a hamlet that is adjacent to Oak Orchard River and the marine park, and Lakeside Beach State Park. Much of the river is a state-protected fish and wildlife habitat area, except for the hamlet of The Bridges, a quaint New England-style fishing village which is two miles upriver from Point Breeze. The harbor is a gateway to the Great Lakes Seaway Trail. The area has public parks and a full-service port where you can catch massive trout and salmon, dine at a waterfront restaurant or just watch the sun set over the lake. You’re also close to Hamlin Beach State Park, which is just 16 miles east. The population of Carlton is about 3,000.
