Welcome to Barre, NY

Overview

The town of Barre is in south-central Orleans County, bordered by the town of Albion to the north, Genesee County to the south, the town of Shelby to the west, and the town of Clarendon to the east. Barre is about halfway between Rochester and Buffalo. Small-town country living has always been the case in Barre, a Right-to-Farm community where fruits, vegetables, corn, wheat and soybeans are a major part of the local economy.

Essentials

Most of this town is rural/agricultural, but Barre also has a few small businesses, such as a deli-grocery store, and services, such as veterinarians. For other stores and grocery shopping, it’s a short drive north to Albion, where you’ll find a Top’s Friendly Market and a Walmart Supercenter, or a quick trip northwest to Medina, which also has a Top’s and a historic downtown shopping area.

Recreation & Entertainment

Barre has many acres of wide-open spaces for hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities, and the town has two sportsmen clubs. Sport fishing is huge along the nearby Oak Orchard River. For bowling, Oak Orchard Bowl in Albion is just a few miles north.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 98 is the major north-south roadway in the area. Route 63, another north-south highway, is just west of town and runs through the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge. Route 31 and Route 31A, both going east-west, are just north of town. The Thruway is a short drive south.

Pros & Cons

This place is great for people who like a small-town atmosphere with lots of wide-open spaces for outdoor activities. You’re close to Albion, the county seat, and Medina, both of which are on the historic Erie Canal. The city of Batavia, which has a lot of activities and a college, is a quick drive south.
